How to Get Your Business Cited in ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews

We covered why Google Search has changed shape: AI Overviews now touch close to half of searches, and ranking alone no longer guarantees the click. This post is the follow-up question every business owner asks next: how do you actually get your business into that AI answer, so you are the one being cited rather than summarized around. Here is the version without the sales pitch attached.

First, the thing everyone is selling: llms.txt

If you have looked into this at all, you have seen llms.txt recommended as the fix, a plain text file you add to your site to "tell AI models about your business." It is worth being clear about where this actually stands. Adoption studies in 2026 put it on roughly one in ten sites, but an analysis of 137,000 domains found that about 97% of those files received zero requests from AI crawlers in a given month. Google said publicly in 2025 that it does not use the file and had no plans to. OpenAI's crawler documentation points site owners to robots.txt instead.

None of that means don't do it. The file takes ten minutes, costs nothing, and carries no downside, and standards sometimes get adopted after they spread. We even built a free llms.txt generator for it. Just be honest with yourself that it is a cheap bet, not the lever that gets you cited. The things below are the lever.

What actually earns a citation

A 2026 meta-analysis that pooled more than fifty separate studies and experiments found the same handful of factors coming up again and again. None of them are new. They are the SEO fundamentals, with the emphasis moved.

Be one consistent business everywhere

An AI system attributing an answer to you by name has to be confident you are a single, clearly defined business. That confidence comes from consistency: the same business name, the same description of what you do, the same address and phone number across your website, your Google Business Profile, and every directory you appear on. If JustDial calls you one thing, your GBP another, and your website a third, you have made yourself hard to cite. This is the same groundwork that drives local map pack visibility, and you can check the public version of it with our Google Business Profile checker.

Get mentioned across the web, not just linked

In that same analysis, plain brand mentions across the web correlated roughly three times more strongly with AI-search visibility than backlinks did. For a business in Noida that means the unglamorous work: accurate listings on the directories your customers actually use, a real presence on the local business associations and industry roundups in your field, answering questions in your area of expertise on forums and Q&A sites where your business name appears in context. An AI model builds its sense of who is credible on a topic from how often and how consistently you show up in the conversation about it.

Answer the question in the first two lines

AI answers are assembled from passages, not whole pages. A section that opens with a direct, self-contained answer to a specific question is far easier to lift into an Overview than one that arrives at the point after three paragraphs of preamble. Write the answer first, then the context and the nuance. This is the single highest-leverage change most business sites can make, and it helps human readers just as much.

Ship the structured data

LocalBusiness, FAQ, and Article schema give a machine an unambiguous, labelled version of what your page is saying, your services, your location, your hours, the questions you answer. Every site we build ships with this by default. If yours does not have it, that is a concrete, one-time fix with a clear payoff for both traditional search and AI citation.

Have real depth on a focused topic

A few connected pages that genuinely cover a subject beat one thin page trying to rank for a keyword. Cited content also tends to be noticeably fresher than the average top-ten organic result, so a page you update and maintain has an edge over one you published once and forgot. Set a schedule to revisit your core pages, not just publish new ones.

ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews are not identical

They pull from overlapping but different places. Google's AI Overviews are drawn from the same index and the same quality signals as normal Google results, so optimising for them is mostly strong classic SEO plus schema. ChatGPT's search has its own retrieval layer and will surface pages that are not in Google's top ten at all, and it leans harder on freshness and entity signals. The practical takeaway: the fundamentals above cover both, but if ChatGPT specifically matters to you, the brand-mention and freshness work matters more, not less.

What a Noida business should do this month

  • Audit your name, description, address, and phone for consistency across your site, GBP, and every directory listing. Fix the mismatches.
  • Rewrite the opening of your top five pages so each one answers its core question in the first two lines.
  • Confirm your site has LocalBusiness and FAQ schema. If not, add it.
  • Pick the three or four directories and communities that actually matter in your field and get an accurate, complete presence on each.
  • Add an llms.txt file because it is free, then forget about it and go do the work above.
  • Track mentions and citations, not just rankings, since a page can rank well and still be absent from the answer above it.

There is little evidence of it so far. Adoption studies in 2026 show most llms.txt files receive no AI-crawler requests at all, and Google has said it does not use the file. It is cheap and harmless to add, but consistent entity signals, brand mentions, structured data, and answer-first content are what actually drive citations.

Rewriting the opening of your key pages so each section answers its specific question directly in the first line or two. AI answers are built from passages, and a self-contained answer is far easier to lift into an Overview than a point buried after several paragraphs.

They matter, but in a 2026 meta-analysis, plain brand mentions across the web correlated about three times more strongly with AI-search visibility than backlinks did. Being mentioned consistently and in context across directories, forums, and industry sites carries more weight than it does in traditional SEO.

It is an emphasis shift within SEO, not a separate discipline. The same fundamentals, real expertise, clean structure, structured data, and a consistent brand identity, drive both traditional rankings and AI citations. GEO just puts more weight on answer-first writing, entity consistency, and web mentions.

Google's AI Overviews draw from the same index and signals as normal Google results, so classic SEO plus schema covers most of it. ChatGPT search has its own retrieval layer, will surface pages outside Google's top ten, and leans harder on freshness and entity signals, so brand-mention and content-maintenance work matters more there.
